Winter 2009

"That we should exist to the praise of His glory..."    Ephesians 1:12
Back Home Next

This page centers around the remnants of a snow and ice storm that began around 10 pm on Monday night, January 26th, 2009.  Most of the pictures were taken February 1st, when a 50°, sunny day encouraged Solomon and me to take the younger two "white" horses out.  But first, these few preliminary ones...

Before the snowstorm, this is pretty much all the snow we got.  We got this much a few times in December and in early January.  Joe got left out of the riding pics, below, because he decided to clean stalls instead. So, this is him on a Sunday walking Peanuts (our pug dog) in our front yard.  Our horses don't live where we do.  A family just two miles away lets us keep them on their land.  Oh, and the dog's not in these pics, sorry.  Not sure why.

A flicker, left, and a downy woodpecker, right, at our front yard suet feeder, also before the late-January snow and ice storm.

Then from January 26th through the 28th it snowed, sleet-ed, rained (at about 22 degrees!), then snowed again.

Solomon found a layered design on the top of his car, still there, 5 days later.  The lines through the middle are sleet and ice.  We had about 3" of snow before the ice, and 4" after.  And I had to go and shovel the first 3" of snow off of our driveway before the ice hit, so the ice formed directly on the concrete right where we needed to drive.  <sigh>  The snow on top of it, afterward, though, made for enough traction for God's Durango.

Solomon took these 3 pics of me on Sunday evening, Feb. 1st...

..and I took the next two, of him, at the same time.  As you can see, we had trouble getting our horses' noses out of the snow, where they were digging for grass any time we weren't moving.  And we did a great deal of MOVING!  haha ... especially Solomon...

Those were 5 pics at the edge of "the ballfield".  After that, we rode down to the creek...

Above, look at the creek that was completely dry during the drought of the summer of 2007, and not much better during the summer of 2008.  Please forgive the number of pics -- I couldn't pick a favorite.  And yes, I do say "crEEk", now. <sigh>

This one was taken by accident, I think... but it's the only one of Sugar's feet in the creek.  Her nose, reins trailing from it, is at the top, left, of the picture.  Doc's head is visible just behind her chest.  A mess, huh?

This one is Doc, Solomon holding him at left, after he pushed Sugar out of the creek and was playing in it himself.  The video, below, is of this same scene.  The sun was very low, as you can see by how it's shining on the backs of his legs.    I think the video is LOADS of fun to watch!  Click here for video.

A little extra:   Icy branches outside of our favorite TGI Friday's - Friday, Jan. 30, 2009

UPDATE:  On February 3rd, we were forecast to have a few snow showers throughout the day, with little or no accumulation.  We got 6 more inches of powder!

So, that was the best and the worst of the Winter of 2009.
